Cultivate a Heart for Evangelism in Your Church

3. Shape a Culture of Mission.

If your church culture is consumeristic or inward-focused, evangelism won’t thrive. And if evangelism isn’t central, neither is Jesus. Dead pulpits produce dead churches. And teaching biblical principles without Jesus is just lifeless religion.

Shape your church culture by weaving mission into everything. Highlight baptisms as community victories. Rejoice when someone shares their faith. Over time, your people will realize they exist for the lost. When that conviction takes root, evangelism becomes the church’s heartbeat.

4. Equip the People.

Many believers really want to share the gospel but feel unprepared. That’s where you come in. Equip them with tools that are simple and repeatable like teaching them how to share their story in three minutes or providing Scripture cards they can carry.

Most importantly, remind them the Holy Spirit is the true evangelist; we’re just joining him in his mission. Evangelism training should free people from performance pressure and anchor them in grace. When the church is equipped, ordinary believers discover they are God’s frontline missionaries.

5. Anchor Evangelism in Prayer and Love.

Prayer is the fuel of evangelism. Lead your people to pray by name for those who don’t yet know Jesus. Create moments in worship services and small groups to intercede for friends, co-workers and family members.

But prayer must be matched with love. Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). It’s about loving people into God’s kingdom. When your church embodies sacrificial love, their words carry weight. Their lives shine in a dark world. And the Spirit draws people to Jesus.

Pastors Are Shepherds, Not Superheroes

Maybe it’s time we change the narrative. Expect your pastor to be a shepherd, not a superhero. Don’t demand their presence at every event or their attention at every moment.
