A 2013 OUTREACH 100 CHURCH
#8 FASTEST-GROWING, #25 LARGEST

When some people think of church, they don’t associate it with fun. So 2/42 Community Church wants to change that.

“We believe serving God can be a blast,” says Lead Pastor David Dummitt. “We take the mission of God very seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

That image begins with the church’s building, a former athletic club transformed into not only a house of worship but a 95,000-square-foot community center with an indoor soccer field, fitness rooms, café with three-story kids’ playscape, arts school, preschool and performance spaces. The church’s Free Stuff Van—a mobile block party—drives around town giving away treats, and it’s not unusual to find an indoor campout or movie night on the church calendar.

“We said from the beginning that we want to be the kind of church that if our doors closed tomorrow, the community would miss us,” Dummitt says.

The Timeless Whisper’s Been Here All Along

To a world on edge, defensive, and hurting, Christians have a responsibility to not only listen to God but also to speak Good News in a way that can actually be heard.

How to Leverage Existing Ministries for Outreach

“You could launch new outreach ministries without removing any existing ministries, increasing your budget or adding staff.”

Doing Unto Others

Davis maintains that ministry shouldn’t be about serving at church on a Sunday morning, because those people are already saved. Instead, it should be about doing ministry on the mission field and talking to people who are unchurched.
