“One of the most frequent responses to the emphasis on Jesus showing respect and grace to sinners is ‘What about His passionate attacks on the Pharisees and scribes?’ One has to help people to see that present-day churchgoers are today’s equivalents to the Pharisees and scribes. Communicating this in a gracious manner is not easy. In addition, remembering the Pharisee that dwells in my own heart has been essential, and letting my own pride and critical spirit be rebuked and challenged by Jesus has been thoroughly humbling. The message that is most difficult for many Christians to hear is that learning from Jesus requires us to teach our children also to be friends of sinners, rather than to keep them wrapped in a security blanket of relationships only with other Christian children. There is only one kind of Christian that Jesus desires us to be, whatever our age or circumstance, and that is one who is in the world as Jesus was in the world. Being faithful to teach this calling in the face of distress and even outrage has not always been easy.” Jerram Barrs
