Church Helps People With HIV, AIDS

Realizing that some people with HIV and AIDS in the community were not getting the spiritual and, in many cases, medical attention they needed, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale started a ministry to help them.

The Oasis ministry provides free confidential testing and counseling and a monthly support group in a safe, confidential location off the church campus.

Through the ministry’s support groups, medical professionals offer information about HIV updates, insurance and changes in medicine. The ministry also partners with Broward County for National HIV Testing Day in June, with more than 1,000 people being tested, including Senior Pastor Bob Coy.

Twenty-minute rapid tests are performed, and trained Calvary volunteers counsel people when they get the results.

A more detailed story about this ministry appeared in the January/February 2011 issue of Outreach magazine.
