Guarding Your Heart and Mind Against Anxiety

Today, I want to share a brief devotional on the theme “God is in control.” Recently, I went through a health battle where the Lord brought this to the forefront of my mind. He showed me how I wanted to be in charge and how I wasn’t trusting that he was the One who held everything together. Much of my anxiety comes from me wanting control. What about you?

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and lose sight of the fact that God is in control. But as Christians, we can find comfort and peace in the knowledge that God is sovereign over all things. That means everything—amazing, right?

One of my favorite passages in the Bible that speaks to this truth is Psalm 46:10, which says, “Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.” This verse reminds us that God is not only in control, but he is also powerful and worthy of our praise.

God Isn’t Surprised by Anything.

The truth is God isn’t surprised by anything that happens to us in this world. When we feel anxious or worried, it can be helpful to remember that God is not surprised by our circumstances.

He is not caught off guard by the events of our lives. In my flesh, my first reaction is to doubt God is in control. I naturally want to try and control my circumstances.

He has a plan and a purpose for all things. As it says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.”

God Is in Control So We Shouldn’t Worry.

One practical way to trust in God’s control is to take our concerns and worries to Him in prayer.

Philippians 4:6–7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

When we bring our worries to God in prayer, we can experience his peace and trust in his control.

So today, let us take a moment to be still and remember that God is in control.

Let us trust in his sovereignty and pray for his peace to guard our hearts and minds when anxiety tries to take hold of our hearts and minds.
