Thaddeus J. Williams

Don’t Follow Your Heart
Zondervan Reflective, 2023
By Thaddeus J. Williams

WHO: Thaddeus J. Williams, associate professor of systematic theology for Talbot School of Theology.

HE SAYS: “If you want to become more truly yourself, then break the commandments of self-worship.”

THE BIG IDEA: This book shows that self-worship is a lie and that a life centered on God is truly satisfying.

THE PROGRESSION: The author presents the 10 commandments of self-worship, with each one being its own chapter: #liveyourbestlife, #okboomer, #followyourheart, #betruetoyourself, #youdoyou, #yolo, #theanswersarewithin, #authentic, #livethedream and #loveislove. Through this book, he blends theology, philosophy, science, psychology and pop culture.

“We were never meant to trust in, be defined by, be justified through, be satisfied in, and be captivated by ourselves. We were made to revere Someone infinitely more interesting than ourselves.”

Pastors Are Shepherds, Not Superheroes

Maybe it’s time we change the narrative. Expect your pastor to be a shepherd, not a superhero. Don’t demand their presence at every event or their attention at every moment.
