As a single mother of four, Korie Rowe understands the struggles and stress of single parenthood. Now the leader of First Baptist Church of Fannett’s women’s ministry, Rowe suggested that the church host a spa day for single moms in the Beaumont, Texas, area. What makes this event unique is First Baptist decided to have a drive-through spa day so moms didn’t have to go through the hassle of taking kids in and out of the car. The drive-through spa idea lets moms stay in their vehicle as they travel through a series of stops designed to pamper and bless them.
Church members set up four stations in the church parking lot. At the greeting station, they collected each single mom’s name and address and each child’s name and age.
“We had the moms [let us know] if they were interested in joining any of our ladies or children’s programs, or if they were interested in knowing more about Jesus,” says church member Callie Cornwell. “We asked these questions so that we could figure out how to best serve each mom.”
They also gave each mom a card, a chocolate rose and a balloon before sending them on to the gift station where mothers received a bag full of goodies, including nail polish, lotions and bath products. At the meal station, the church gave moms a quart-size container of soup, chips and fresh-baked cookies. The final station was for prayer.
“We popped our head in the cars, thanked them for coming and asked them if there was anything that was heavy on their heart,” says Cornwell. “We then took a moment to say a prayer with each mom.
The single moms told event organizers that they felt honored. “We wanted to do something for them that would encourage them to relax and take a moment for themselves,” says Cornwell. “Moms, in general, wear so many hats, but single moms have to wear every hat.”
