Study Questions for “The Atheist Who Went to Church"

In the March/April 2007 issue of Outreach, the article “The Atheist Who Went to Church” reveals an atheist’s thoughts on the Church and Christians. Hemant Mehta shares about visiting churches and why his experiences haven’t changed his views. Use the study questions below to consider how non-Christians view you and your church and start the process of changing how atheists and those with different beliefs view Christians and the Church.

  • If the eBay atheist had visited your church, what do you think his impressions of Christianity, Christians and your church would have been?

  • Hemant was able to participate in a discussion with a pastor about things like intelligent design and evolution. Does your church provide outlets for non-Christians to ask the “tough questions” or dialog in a friendly manner? If not, what are some ways you might be able to make this happen?

  • Hemant said he thinks many evangelical pastors perceive just about everything to be a threat against Christianity. Evaluate the sermons preached in your church and your ministries. How does your church respond to cultural events and issues? Does it tend to address topics defensively? How can your church engage culture rather than resist it?

  • Did hearing Hemant’s story change your views or assumptions about atheists and their beliefs? What are some of your views about atheism?

  • Hemant references Thomas the disciple’s doubts. In addition to your guests, some of your church’s regular attendees may struggle with spiritual doubts. Do you provide them support? How?

  • Atheists can get on board with helping others, says Hemant. He talks about one church group remodeling a couple’s home, with the help of unchurched neighbors. Is your church doing similar service projects in your community? And if so, are you including people who don’t regularly attend your church?
